Earnhardt Ganassi Racing announced Wednesday that Jamie McMurray will be the pilot for the No. 1 Bass Pro Shops/Tracker Boats Chevrolet in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series in 2010.
Martin Truex Jr. is the current driver for the No. 1 car but has vacated the position for next season to join Michael Waltrip Racing. This is a reunion for McMurray and team co-owner Chip Ganassi. McMurray drove for Ganassi from 2003 until 2005 before his four year stint with Roush Fenway Racing, his current team.
"I am really excited about this opportunity with Earnhardt Ganassi Racing, as I think Juan Pablo and Martin have shown this season their equipment is as good as anyone's in the garage,” McMurray said. "It will also be fun to work with some of the people that I worked with when I was there a few years ago." Roush Fenway Racing bumped McMurray out of the No. 26 car for next year because the team has to downsize from five cars to four in order to comply with NASCAR’s four-car limit rule that goes into effect next season. McMurray will join Juan Pablo Montoya at EGR. "To be able to sign a veteran driver with the talent and experience of Jamie was important to us," Ganassi said. "We know Jamie and understand what makes him tick as a driver. We had a lot of success with Jamie in the early part of his career and are looking for more of the same.” McMurray’s career began in 2002 when he drove the final six races of the season for Sterling Marlin who was injured. He earned his first career victory at Lowe’s Motor Speedway in only his 2nd start, earning him a spot in the NASCAR record books. He has two other Sprint Cup Series victories including his most recent at Talladega earlier this month. MORE NASCAR NEWS
