To immediately address the track surface issue that arose during Sunday’s Daytona 500, Daytona International Speedway announced this morning that reinforced concrete was being installed in Turn 2 beginning today.
The repairs will take two days on the 31-degree banking in Turn 2 and will be followed by cure time.
A team of engineers and specialists from the North American Testing Corporation (NATC) made the call for the repairs citing unusually wet, cold weather as the cause for the erosion when the cars traveled over the surface. The evaluation will continue and the team will consider the entire track before implementing further solutions. "This is the correct course of action to repair the track," DIS Track President Robin Braig said. "Our team of engineers and asphalt specialists with North American Testing Corporation has previous experience with concrete being used on an asphalt track and it is a proven solution." The track's next scheduled event is Daytona 200 week February 25th through March 8th featuring motorcycle racing. MORE NASCAR NEWS
