Rain forced NASCAR officials to cancel Saturday’s qualifying session for Sunday’s Aaron’s 499 NASCAR Sprint Cup race with the 43-car field being determined by speeds in Friday’s first practice session.
Carl Edwards recorded the fastest lap, 199.675 mph, in opening practice and starts from the pole. Edwards has not won a race at Talladega in 17 attempts.
“It looked like it was a pretty wide-open practice session,” Edwards said this afternoon. “I think tomorrow could be any type of race, but I can guarantee you the final couple of laps are gonna be insane.”
Martin Truex, Jr. ran 199.650 mph in practice and lines up on the outside of row one.
Marcos Ambrose, Joey Logano and Ryan Newman rounded out the top-five.
Denny Hamlin starts seventh in the JGR No. 11, his first time back in the car since March at Auto Club Speedway, where he sustained a back injury in a last lap crash with Joey Logano. Hamlin plans to yield the
seat to relief driver Brian Vickers during the first caution flag.
Elliott Sadler, driving a fourth JGR entry this weekend, was the only driver not making the field.
Sunday’s Aaron's 499 will be broadcast live from Talladega Superspeedway at 1 p.m. ET on FOX.
